On 31 May, Software Cornwall partnered with Goonhilly Earth Station to host ‘Tech Connect’, an event that provides an opportunity for Cornish tech businesses to connect, share skills and knowledge, explore future opportunities for the sector and celebrate success in Cornwall.
Business Development Advisor James Bemrose, from Truro and Penwith College, attended the event along with over 100 guests from the sector. James hosted an informative lightening talk that covered ‘How to Develop Software Developers’, with the support from Chris Weavill, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Hertzian, one of the College’s Apprenticeship employers. James said: “We are proud to be a member of the Software Cornwall community and the Tech Connect event was a great opportunity for making connections, for businesses to share their skills and knowledge, to explore future opportunities for the sector and also to celebrate successes. As an outstanding College, our aim is to work closely with businesses to support young people entering the tech industry and to develop our quality provision in response to the needs of employers.”
A ‘Tech Jam’ formed part of the event and provided industry-related activities for young learners from a range of Cornish schools, inspiring the future of the tech generation. There was also an opportunity for prospective learners to find out more about the industry, how to enter it and the possibilities the sector may offer future generations.
James continued: “It was brilliant to see so many young people getting excited about technology and a privilege to present our Software Developer Apprenticeship (Level 4) as a means of helping tackle the software skills shortage in Cornwall. Our aim with the programme is to develop digital skills and retain talent in Cornwall, both key in developing the strength of the Cornish economy.”
The Software Developer Apprenticeship (Level 4) was designed in partnership with employers and introduced by the College last year.
