There is no shortage of opinion when it comes to what qualifies as a ‘best practice’ and even whether the term ‘best practice’ meaningfully applies to coding. There are many guidelines and standards and collections of best practices, some of which are clearly dependent on programming language, architecture and application type, but many of which reflect little more than the personal preference of their authors.

In this talk, we acknowledge the dependency of ‘best’ on context — what is best for Python is not necessarily best for C, what is best for web development is not necessarily best for embedded development, and so on — to look at some practices that have been shown to be sound with respect to reasoning, evidence and history. This includes matters of syntax, of control flow, of tooling, of activities outside the code and more.
