SUMMARY:Test-Driven Development Guided by ZOMBIES Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Have you had a hard time figuring out where to start with Test-Driven Development? What if ZOMBIES could help you build code that does exactly what you think it is supposed to do? What if ZOMBIES helped you build a test harness that can help you keep your code clean and behaving as expected for a long and useful life? ZOMBIES can help! \nI’m not talking about a legion of the undead or virus stricken. ZOMBIES is an acronym that guides you\, the engineer\, to the next test. ZOMBIES can help you avoid forgetting critical tests and production code behaviors. We’ll go through the thought process and steps with a detailed code example. \nThe ZOMBIES stands for: \nZ – Zero\nO – One\nM – Many\nB – Boundary Behaviors\nI – Interface definition\nE – Exercise Exceptional behavior\nS – Simple Scenarios\, Simple Solutions \nAbout James Grenning\nI train and coach engineers and managers doing software development. My broad and deep background makes this line of work a good fit for me. One of my goals is to bring the Agile Development and Object Oriented Design techniques to embedded developers. To support that goal\, I’ve written a book\, Test-Driven Development for Embedded C\, available at www.pragprog.com/titles/JGADE. I was fortunate enough to participate in the creation of the Agile Manifesto in 2001. \nI am a regular speaker at the embedded systems conference and have written articles for IEEE. I am currently working on a book to bring this important topic to embedded development teams. \nI have spent time in development\, systems engineering\, marketing and management. With Object Mentor I have been on teams from many industry areas and technologies\, from real time embedded to desktop software\, to large enterprise information systems. So\, my experience is not limited to one industry area or technology. I have a realistic view of what it takes to make software development projects successful and know good software design\, code\, test\, and management practices. My broad experience pays off when guiding clients through tough development situations. \nSpecialties: Embedded software\, Test Driven Development\, Extreme Programming\, Agile Development\, Requirements analysis\, Use cases\, Automated test\, FitNesse\, C\, C++\, Java\, Object Oriented Design\, Software Architecture\, Project Management\, UML\, Agile Planning. I invented Planning Poker\, here’s the original paper (https://wingman-sw.com/articles/planning-poker). \nAs this training is Part-Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund there will be some paperwork for attendees to complete (this only needs completing once and not required for every masterclass). \nThis project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Cornwall Council has been chosen by Government as a Lead Authority for the fund and is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

SUMMARY:Code Reading Masterclass - Marit van Dijk
DESCRIPTION:As developers\, we spend a lot of time learning to write code\, while spending little to no time learning to read code. Meanwhile\, we often spend more time reading code than actually writing it. Shouldn’t we be spending at least the same amount of time and effort improving this skill? Deliberate practice can help us get better at reading code. Learning how to better read and understand code\, can in turn teach us what makes code readable. This might even help us to write code that is easier to read. \nIn this workshop we will practice our code reading skills by reading an unfamiliar piece of code\, using structured exercises. Participants will practice reading code\, and take away knowledge about how they can continue to improve this important skill. \nAbout Marit\nMarit van Dijk is a software developer with 20 years of experience in different roles and companies. She is a Java Champion and works as a Developer Advocate at JetBrains. She loves building awesome software with amazing people and making developers lives better. \nShe enjoys learning new things as well as sharing knowledge on programming\, software development\, testing & test automation\, and more. She has contributed to open-source projects like Cucumber and several other projects. \nMarit speaks at international conferences\, in webinars\, and on podcasts\, occasionally writes blog posts\, and contributed to the book “97 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know” (O’Reilly Media).

SUMMARY:From Patterns to ADRs Masterclass - Kevlin Henney
DESCRIPTION:One of the greatest challenges we have with any codebase is to understand its rationale. \n\nWhy is it the way it is?\nHow did it come to be this way?\nWhich decisions are\, therefore\, decisions that need to be respected and which should be discarded as legacy?\n\nPatterns offer a system of concepts and examples for reasoning about why code and architecture are the way they are. In recent years\, inspired by patterns\, architecture decision records (ADRs) have become a popular way to document and version rationale in a system. In this talk\, we’ll look at the core ideas\, common misconceptions and some guidelines for writing ADRs \nAbout Kevlin\nKevlin is an independent consultant\, speaker\, writer and trainer. His software development interests are in programming\, practice and people. \nKevlin has been a columnist for various magazines and websites. He’s a co-author of A Pattern Language for Distributed Computing and On Patterns and Pattern Languages\, two volumes in the Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture series\, and editor of 97 Things Every Programmer Should Know and co-editor of 97 Things Every Java Programmer Should Know. \nHe also writes short fiction\, with a particular emphasis on flash fiction\, and perform at spoken word events. He has helped organise events for National Flash-Fiction Day\, the Bristol Festival of Literature and the Flash in Hand open mic evening in Bristol. \nAs this training is Part-Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund there will be some paperwork for attendees to complete (this only needs completing once and not required for every masterclass). \nThis project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. SUMMARY:Communicating Software Design and Architecture Masterclass - Jacqui Read
DESCRIPTION:Communicating software design and architecture is a crucial aspect of successfully working with software\, however\, this is a skill you don’t get taught. Learning by trial and error is not ideal\, so how do you create inclusive diagrams and visuals that successfully communicate to your audience? Apply communication design patterns and recognise antipatterns. The purpose of a diagram is to successfully communicate with the audience\, which sounds deceptively simple. Communication design patterns can be applied to guide you towards this ultimate goal of successful communication\, and towards maximum inclusion for your audience. \nIn this session\, learn from a hands-on solution architect – and thought leader in communication design and documentation – how to tailor your visuals to your audience\, choose the most appropriate standards (or not) and level of detail\, and apply patterns to improve accessibility for all audiences. \n  \nAbout Jacqui\nJacqui Read is an internationally-recognised solution and enterprise architect\, and author of Communication Patterns: A Guide for Developers and Architects. She teaches public and private workshops and speaks at international conferences on topics such as architecture practices\, technical communication\, and systems design. Jacqui specialises in untangling and extracting value from data and knowledge\, helping businesses to determine direction in complex environments. \nHer professional interests include collaborative modelling\, knowledge management\, Domain-Driven Design\, sociotechnical architecture\, and modernising enterprise architecture practices. Outside of work she enjoys gardening and strumming her ukulele while singing at the same time. Her website is https://jacquiread.com \n\n  \n\nThis event is fully funded for members. If you don’t have the promotion code please get in touch info@softwarecornwall.org \nAs this training is Part-Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund there will be some paperwork for attendees to complete (this only needs completing once and not required for every masterclass).

SUMMARY:Dates and times: Hard\, but not impossible Masterclass - Jon Skeet
DESCRIPTION:Some developers write date/time-sensitive code without worrying about it — but also without thinking about it. Some developers write date/time-sensitive code and worry about it a lot because it’s hard. \nIn this talk Jon will provide a conceptual framework and some guidance to help you write date/time-sensitive code with a reasonable degree of confidence\, and test it. Examples will use the modern Java package “java.time” and Jon’s own Noda Time project for .NET\, but the concepts themselves are portable. \nAbout Jon\nJon Skeet is a Staff Developer Platform Engineer at Google\, working on Google Cloud Platform client libraries for .NET\, based in the London office. (That’s the theory\, anyway. Most of the time he works from his shed instead.) He’s best known for contributions to Stack Overflow as well as his book\, C# in Depth. Additionally he is the primary maintainer of the Noda Time date/time library for .NET. \nOutside of software\, Jon is a committed Christian\, and enjoys theatre (particularly musical theatre)\, playing board games\, and spending time with his amazing family \n  \nAs this training is Part-Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund there will be some paperwork for attendees to complete (this only needs completing once and not required for every masterclass). \n  \nThis project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Cornwall Council has been chosen by Government as a Lead Authority for the fund and is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

SUMMARY:Coding Best Practices Masterclass - Kevlin Henney
DESCRIPTION:There is no shortage of opinion when it comes to what qualifies as a ‘best practice’ and even whether the term ‘best practice’ meaningfully applies to coding. There are many guidelines and standards and collections of best practices\, some of which are clearly dependent on programming language\, architecture and application type\, but many of which reflect little more than the personal preference of their authors. \nIn this talk\, we acknowledge the dependency of ‘best’ on context — what is best for Python is not necessarily best for C\, what is best for web development is not necessarily best for embedded development\, and so on — to look at some practices that have been shown to be sound with respect to reasoning\, evidence and history. This includes matters of syntax\, of control flow\, of tooling\, of activities outside the code and more. \nThere will be a Q&A session at 12:30 \n  \nThis masterclass is free for members (promo code in slack and will be sent via email newsletter)

We aim to prepare them for future pitching opportunities through a combination of in-person workshops\, online content\, and training. Our focus is on enhancing their ability to answer the crucial question\, “What do you do?” (WDYD?)\, which is a pivotal moment in any pitch.\n\nTraining Focus:\nThe answer to “What do you do?” sets the direction for conversations and future relationships. Unfortunately\, many pitches fall short of their potential. Our mission is to change that by providing founders with the necessary skills and tools to make their pitches stand out.\n\nWDYD Pitch Coaching:\nA comprehensive 3-part pitch training program designed specifically for founders.\n\nPart 01: 1/2 Day In-Person Training\nContent:\n– The 4 S’s of Successful Pitching:\n1. Pitch Strategy\n2. Storytelling\n3. Speaker Performance\n4. Slide Design\n\nActivity:\n– PitchClub 01 – WDYD\nAll attendees will deliver a 30-second networking pitch\, which is similar to the “What Do You Do?” scenario encountered at events and the opening of startup pitches.\nEach pitch will receive 4 types of feedback:\n1. Anonymous Survey\n2. Self-Reflection\n3. Peer Feedback\n4. On-the-Spot Coaching\n\nPart 02: Online Content\nFounders will gain access to a curated selection of online content\, which they can review at their own pace before the next online session. The content includes:\n– Pitching A to Z\n– Public Speaking A to Z\n– How to Get a Reply in 3 Days\n– Ace Your Next 5-Minute Pitch\n\nPart 03: Online Workshop (60-90 Minutes)\nPitchClub 02 – WDYD\nFounders will once again share their 30-second networking pitch\, simulating real-life scenarios at events and startup pitch introductions.\nFollowing each pitch\, founders will receive 4 types of feedback:\n1. Anonymous Survey\n2. Self-Reflection\n3. Peer Feedback\n4. On-the-Spot Coaching\n\nThis comprehensive blend of in-person and online training provides founders with the opportunity to witness the evolution and improvement of their pitches over time. It equips them with the skills and confidence they need to excel in future pitching opportunities.\n\nRemember: Mastering the “What do you do?” question can be the key to unlocking success in your entrepreneurial journey. Join us on this transformative training journey to elevate your pitching skills and make a lasting impression.\n\nAs this is fully funded by our EU funded Employer Led Skills project you will be contacted by our Training & Skills Coordinator to arrange a 10 minute zoom call to complete the sign up paperwork.\n\nEuropean Social Fund\nThe European Social Fund is partially funding Software Cornwall to run this training project to provide development training for employees within the software industry.
