SUMMARY:Data Challenge Cornwall - OCR of Historical Mining Records
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge \nCornish Lithium is an exciting and rapidly growing science-driven business that is using data and cutting edge technology to identify lithium deposits in Cornwall. \nHuge amounts of untapped data exist in written or diagrammatical form dating from Cornwall’s long and illustrious mining heritage. The Challenge: automate the extraction of key words and features from historical mining journals and maps with a focus on helping to locate future mineral deposits in Cornwall. \nJoin the session to hear Cornish Lithium explain the opportunities and challenges surrounding mining lithium in Cornwall\, a more detailed introduction to the data challenge covering the importance of historical information and how it is currently being used to model the subsurface to target lithium enriched geothermal waters. The paper in question is the journal in which it was first documented that lithium was found to be issuing out of permeable structures. Also a broader scientific understanding of Cornish geology to inform the development of data processing for identifying potentially rich and useful deposits will be given. \nThere will be time for questions and discussion after the presentation of the challenge. \nAfter this session you can work in a group\, or individually\, and present your findings at a follow up event. \n—- \nData Challenge Cornwall \nThe idea for Data Challenge Cornwall emerged after it became clear that businesses\, entrepreneurs and individuals with expertise and enthusiasm weren’t aware of the open challenges in key sectors in Cornwall – and therefore couldn’t participate in solving them. \nThe benefits of participating include: \n* Opportunities – Joining a challenge gives you the chance to showcase your expertise and your business. \n* Learning – Data challenges are an excellent way to learn new and develop existing data science skills. \n* Make Friends – Thee Data Challenge series is an opportunity to make friends with others who share your interest in data\, technology and Cornwall’s leading industries. \n—- \nPractical Stuff \nAll events are free to attend. \nAll events are suitable for a general audience that has an interest and some knowledge of data analysis and tools. Students are as welcome as professionals. You don’t need to be an expert\, the challenges can be a great opportunity to learn. \nAll events are online-only due to the coronavirus situation. \n— \nRead more about Data Challenge Cornwall 2021 here: https://www.datachallengecornwall.org/ \n— \nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85297638545?pwd=dURiWFBSZk1weE9qdVNFZW52YjJjZz09 \nMeeting ID:[masked]Passcode:[masked]

SUMMARY:Data Challenge Cornwall - Predicting Housing Faults & Resident Support Needs
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge \nCoastline Housing is an established not-for-profit housing association based in Cornwall. Coastline manages approximately 5\,000 homes. A significant amount of business activity is maintenance and repair. \nCoastline Housing firmly believes that insights from data can\, and should\, drive business planning and just-in-time actions. Coastline has a detailed inventory of homes and their configuration\, a record of faults and maintenance\, as well as environmental sensors in some homes. \nThe aim of this project is to explore the data to: \n* Establish when repairs are likely to become necessary. \n* Identify correlations between home build and design configuration and issues such as damp. \n* Patterns which indicate residents in need of additional or urgent support. \nJoin the session to find out more about Coastline Housing’s operations\, and the data itself\, and discuss ideas for how this data can benefit both business efficiency and also residents’ quality of life too. SUMMARY:Innovation Surgery: Digital Projects
DESCRIPTION:A step by step guide to launching digital projects with guest speaker Sam Armondi from Everest Media\n\n\nFrom idea to launch: a step-by-step guide for digital projects.\nIn this discussion\, we will examine the typical approach taken to digital projects and why it can cause significant pain and cost for businesses. \n \nWe will look at tried and tested methods to go from idea to prototype to successful launch\, with a special emphasis on: \n•	Identifying the real problem you’re trying to solve and shaping that into the smallest product possible to test \n•	Specifying your project in ‘just enough’ detail to enable a successful delivery \n•	Working with experts to identify the best solution for now and the future \n•	Driving change and transformation in your business through an organisation so your new project is a success. \n \n We will also consider the various options you have for delivery (in-house teams\, agencies\, freelances\, offshoring) and the typical commercial models they use. \nTo get the most from the session\, you will need a smartphone or other device with internet access. We will be running several interactive games and simulations to bring the webinar to life. \n \nDelivered by Sam Armondi\, Managing Director of Everest Media: \nEverest Media delivers business transformation solutions built on technical expertise\, strong values and has a flare for delivering digital projects that power businesses and return tangible benefits. \n \n Spaces for this particular surgery are limited so book now to avoid disappointment. \n \n \nDelivered by ATI²\, ‘Innovation Surgery: Digital Projects ’ is a fully-funded webinar. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Docker
DESCRIPTION:This course demonstrates the core concepts and explains how to integrate Docker into new or existing development projects.\n\n\nAn Introduction to Docker \nDelivery method: Online using Zoom \nDelivery Start and End Dates & Times: 2nd of March 2020\, 3rd or 4th of March (see details below) \nAll participants to attend the session on the 2nd of March 2020 1.30pm 5.00pm \nThe group will then split into 2 workshops to either attend on the 3rd or the 4th of March 1.30pm – 5.00pm \nDelivered by: Craig Buckler \nTicket Price: Part Funded £150 – (evidence required) / Non funded – £300 \nA hands-on one-day course split over two half-days. \n \nCourse Details \nDespite the benefits\, Docker is often shunned by developers. It looks complex. Terminology can be impenetrable. Tutorials never explain how to use Docker during development. \nIt need not be this way. This course demonstrates the core concepts and explains how to integrate Docker into new or existing development projects. You will quickly learn what Docker can do\, how it works\, and best-practice techniques for your team. \n \nDay 1 outline: \nWhat is Docker? \nQuick start example. \nDocker terminology and concepts. \nInstalling Docker on Windows\, macOS and Linux. \nStarting\, stopping\, and restarting applications. \nConnecting to running applications. \nDefining volumes and networks. \nCleaning up installations. \nUsing Docker Compose to manage multiple applications. \n \nDay 2 outline: \nCreate Docker-powered WordPress development environment. \nCreate your own web application with live code editing and debugging. \nAn introduction to image repositories\, orchestration\, and further resources. \n \nWho is this course for? \nDevelopers\, DevOps professionals\, and IT managers who want to improve their application development and deployment processes. The course specifically refers to web technologies\, but the concepts can be applied to any stack. \nWhat you will need \nYou should have a modern PC running a recent edition of Windows 10\, macOS\, or Linux (ideally a Debian/Ubuntu distro). Instructions for installing Docker will be provided prior to the course\, but further assistance will be available during the day. \nThe course will demonstrate example projects using HTML\, CSS\, JavaScript\, PHP\, Node.js\, Apache\, NGINX\, MySQL\, MongoDB\, WordPress\, etc. You do not need experience of that software\, but a basic understanding of web technology concepts will be useful: \nweb browsers and client-side HTML\, CSS\, and JavaScript \nweb servers and language runtimes (e.g. Node.js\, PHP\, Python\, Ruby\, .NET\, etc.) \nother dependencies\, such as databases (e.g. PostgreSQL\, MongoDB\, SQL Server etc.) \nThe course will be delivered online using Zoom so a stable internet connection is required. \nWhat will you get? \nYou will receive: \nA full day of Docker training (split over two sessions) \nVideos of recorded Zoom sessions for playback after the event \nCourse handouts \nSample code \nA certificate of attendance. \nWhat can Docker do for you? \nDocker can revolutionise the development and deployment of your software projects: \nInstall project dependencies in minutes \nDocker can install\, configure\, and manage all the software your project requires\, including web servers\, language runtimes\, frameworks\, databases\, and more. \nDependencies are lightweight and isolated \nOther than disk space\, your PC is not changed. Multiple or legacy versions of the same software can be run concurrently without conflicts\, e.g. MySQL 5 and 8. Dependencies can be started\, stopped\, removed\, or reinstalled at any time. \nApplications become portable \nYour project and its dependencies can be distributed to other development machines and production servers. It will work identically\, even if some software is not natively supported on that OS. Docker ends those “but it works on my PC” complications! \nContinue to use your existing OS\, tools\, and workflows \nDevelopers can continue to use their preferred software. It does not matter whether they are using Windows\, macOS\, Linux\, specific IDEs\, or other tools. Docker provides all the benefits of local development and debugging. \nDeployments become faster and more robust \nDocker can scale your application according to demand and keep it running if instances fail. \nAbout Craig Buckler \nCraig is a freelance web consultant\, speaker\, writer\, and trainer with more than twenty years in the industry. He has worked on a variety of successful projects and training courses for organisations including Microsoft\, Thomson Reuters\, Hewlett Packard\, Symantec\, Vodafone\, Sky\, ITN\, FT.com\, The Wall St Journal\, Santander\, NatWest\, HMRC\, the UK and European Parliaments\, and several local councils and universities. \nCraig has written more than 1\,200 tutorials for SitePoint.com\, created video courses for O’Reilly\, and has authored many books including Docker for Web Developers\, Jump Start Web Performance\, Browser DevTool Secrets\, and Modern JavaScript. You may have encountered Craig at the TechExeter or FutureSync conferences or on Twitter @craigbuckler. \nThe European Social Fund is partially funding Software Cornwall to run this training project to provide development training for employees within the software industry. As a Software Cornwall member you will be receiving a discount to this course by email. This course is only available to those from the UK or EU. To participate in the training certain personal information will be required from attendants as proof of employment and eligibility to attend.
