Coding for Women at AIR Studio, Falmouth University - Tech Cornwall

Coding for Women at AIR Studio, Falmouth University

This is a women only skills development workshop in computer coding.

It’s being run at Falmouth Universities AIR Studio, where businesses, research and innovation collide.  More details are below.

Wearable Synthesizer

Build your own wearable synthesizer, sensing your motion and translating it into sound. You will learn to make your own inputs, like flex sensors, zipper sliders or fabric potentiometer. Then you will learn to translate these signals and programme an Arduino lilypad to output the data as sound. You will then sew this awesome tech onto your own piece of garment. Come and learn about wearable tech and coding in a playful way and create your own wearable synth by pimping a piece of your clothing.

This two-day workshop is delivered by MzTEK a non-profit organisation with the aim of addressing the imbalance of women artists working in the fields of new media, computer arts, and technology.

Day one: conductive materials, soft circuits and sensing the body’s motion
â—¦Conductivity and conductive materials – especially in connection to wearable electronics/soft circuits
â—¦Self made sensors with conductive yarn, fabric and beads
â—¦Circuits and how to connect electronics
â—¦Draw your own circuit
â—¦Tips and tricks to saw the components to the piece of clothing
â—¦Start sewing components

Day two: programming and creating a functioning system
â—¦The lilypad – a tiny computer
â—¦Basic programming principles in Arduino
â—¦How to program the lilypad and read sensor values as well as sending signals to the speakers
â—¦Finish attaching components and making your own wearable synth

The total cost of this two-day workshop is £140* (including materials)

*If you are self-employed/a registered business based in Cornwall you will be eligible for a free place and will simply pay for the cost of the materials of £40. You will have to complete both days of the workshop and fill out the relevant paperwork to be reimbursed for the workshop fee of £100.
