Local businesses, including Crowd Funder, Bluefruit, Hertzian, Angel Fulfilment, Focus Technology, Pendennis Shipyard, Eight Wire, Encoded and Aspire Academy Trust, were invited to meet students and see the projects they were working on during their lessons and the skills they have acquired.
The students, who all study either A Level Computer Science, Level 3 Diploma in Software Development or participate in the Computing Academy at Truro and Penwith College, showcased a variety of technical skills-based projects, including 3D game design, a cryptography challenge and ethical hacking.
The students also displayed the Raspberry Pi Near Space Mission, which will be lifting off again this year after successfully capturing stunning images of the Earth from space in 2014 and the award-winning project Revolution Pi, developed by William Dash, Jimi Harrold and Greg Wallis. Revolution Pi used Raspberry Pi computers to create a new way to control a computer using eye movements, and won the Sixth Form and College Award at PA Consulting Group’s national Raspberry Pi competition last year.
Kevin McCoag, IT and Computing lecturer at Truro and Penwith College, said: “We want to ensure that as a college we are working to serve the needs of the local business community by teaching students with the most useful programming languages and technical skills; the skills that will make them more employable or better prepared to study at a higher level.”
Following the event, the College is working with the invited businesses to arrange work experience and placements for students, guest lectures and Apprenticeship vacancies to enhance the employability of the future of technology in Cornwall.
