A leading local College is offering financial support to help students access University level study in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.
Truro and Penwith College has announced it will be offering a £1,000 non-means tested ‘Technical Bursary’ to students starting STEM University level courses in September 2020.
The Technical Bursary is designed to support those who planned to enter employment or work-based training, but now find their opportunities are limited due to the impact of COVID-19.
With the help of the bursary such individuals will have the option to enhance their skills and knowledge through an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree (FdA), before returning to their chosen career path when employers will be more likely to have opportunities available.
The move is expected to be welcomed by Cornish employers, helping to safeguard a supply of quality skills that will be ready to enter the workforce when businesses recover from the impact of COVID-19, also supporting the recovery of the wider Cornish economy.
The bursary will be available to all new full and part-time students starting University level subjects in STEM this September and is in addition to any means-tested bursaries they may be entitled to.
Truro and Penwith College University level courses covered by the bursary include:
- HNC in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)
- HNC Applied Science (Biology)
- FdSc Computer Technology
- FdSc Cyber Security
- HND in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)
- HND Applied Science (Biology)
Andrew Smart, Programme Team Leader for Higher Education at Truro and Penwith College commented: “We were made aware of students who had completed their studies in the hope of progressing to technical employment but because of COVID-19 these opportunities are not available in some sectors.
“Our STEM courses, either a 1-year or 2-year programme of study, will enable students to increase their knowledge and skills and be more than ready to move into the workplace when the opportunities appear. The bursary aims to support students from a wide range of backgrounds in Cornwall to study locally and then move onto our expanding local STEM sector”.
The Technical Bursary is the College’s latest move in its continued commitment to STEM and placing Cornwall at the forefront of STEM education.
Last year Truro and Penwith College announced it was Cornwall’s only partner in the £25 million South West Institute of Technology (SWIoT).
The SWIoT will see a new £7 million specialist facility open at Truro College in September 2021 that will match the best facilities available in the UK and help put the South West region at the forefront of digital and engineering education.
The College is still accepting University level applications for September 2020. For more information contact [email protected] or call 01872 267061.
